Canberra United add local defender for Season 12

Fresh from being named the Capital Football NPLW Player of the Year, local star Jessie Rasschaert will #GoGreen and join Canberra United for Season 12 of the Westfield W-League.

Rasschaert was named the region’s top player following an incredible 2019 with local treble winners Belconnen United.

The central defender was at the heart of a Belconnen side that conceded just four goals in all competitions, while scoring over 100 of their own.

But after dominating at a local level, the 32-year-old mother of one now has her sights set on her maiden Westfield W-League campaign, something she admits has been a long-time individual goal.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing in the Westfield W-League, but just never thought it would happen, especially after having a baby less than two years ago,” Rasschaert said.

The star defender will follow in the footsteps of Michelle Heyman, Caitlin Munoz, Catherine Brown and most recently Lauren Keir and Maddy Whittall as Belconnen players who have also donned the green of Canberra United.

“I’m really excited for this season, to be given the opportunity to play at a professional level still feels a bit surreal,” Rasschaert said.

“The girls are amazing and have been really welcoming and there is a lot of talent in the team so I’m excited to see what we can do together this year.”

Canberra United Head Coach Heather Garriock says Rasschaert is a fantastic role model to have around the group.

“Juggling being a mother, a full-time physio and a professional footballer, Jessie is an exceptional role model,” Garriock said.

“Her athleticism and tenacity in attack and defence will add so much value to our squad.

“I’m delighted the fans will get to see another local star in green this season.”

Rasschaert is the fourth local player to sign with Canberra United for the upcoming season, joining young guns Karly Roestbakken, Laura Hughes and Hayley Taylor-Young.

If you want to #GoGreen with Jessie, Season 12 memberships are now on sale to the public on the Canberra United website. Be sure to sign up in time for our Round One clash with Perth Glory at McKellar Park on Sunday, 17th November.
