Amazing Grace gets the equaliser for Canberra United

Another late surge from Canberra United has seen the side come away with a 1-1 draw against Brisbane Roar, to share the points in Round 3 of the Westfield W-League.

Goalkeeper Sally James was involved from the start, forced to make a multitude of incredible saves to keep Canberra United in the game. However one was to be almost impossible to save, with Matilda Katrina Gorry opening the scoring just two minutes in for Brisbane Roar, with a rocket that went straight to the back of the net.

It wasn’t long before Nicki Flannery and Michelle Heyman had their first of many chances for the night. Heyman hit the crossbar early on, going agonisingly close to equalising, before a speedy Paige Satchell set her up for yet another close call.

Young gun Jessika Nash was great in defence, putting her body on the line, while Lauren Keir’s physicality was on display, keeping Brisbane at bay going into half time.

Going into the second half, United had the wind behind them.

Heyman was again looking to get on the scoresheet, with an early shot soaring over the top of the net before forcing Georgina Worth into a save in the 65th minute.

A burst of energy was provided in the 67th minute with a double substitution. Paige Satchell and Demi Koulizakis called it a night, giving Rachael Goldstein and 16-year-old Sasha Grove their turn on the field.

Goldstein went for gold and tried her luck from afar, but it wasn’t to be. Just a few minutes later however, a brilliant long range effort from Grace Maher provided Canberra with the equaliser.

Sally James was able to pull off another stellar save to see Canberra United finish the game at 1-1 at Dolphin Stadium and share the points heading into a ten day break.
