Canberra United finds new home at Viking Park

Viking Park

Canberra United will have a new home during the 2020/21 Westfield W-League season, with the club to play their six home fixtures at Viking Park.

Viking Park, which is a multi-sport stadium located in the Tuggeranong Valley suburb of Wanniassa, can hold up to 8,000 people with a 1,000-seat grandstand. United’s former home venue, McKellar Park, remains closed due to the effect of COVID-19 and will not be available for the 2020/21 season.

United has fond memories of Viking Park, having played at the venue in 2014/15 Westfield W-League season. A late Ash Sykes goal upset Perth Glory at Viking Park in the final round of the season to ensure their spot in the finals, on the way to the club claiming their second Westfield W-League championship.

Canberra United CEO Phil Brown said Viking Park will be a great venue for players, members and fans.

“I extend my sincere thanks to Vikings Group for making Viking Park the new home of Canberra United for the 2020/21 Westfield W-League season,” Mr Brown said. “I speak for the whole club when I say we are looking forward to playing at their excellent facility.

“McKellar Park and Belconnen Soccer Club, like many in our community, have felt the impact of COVID-19.

“I want to thank Belconnen Soccer Club for their support of Canberra United over the years and we hope to see football return to the venue in the future.”

Vikings Group CEO Anthony Hill welcomed United to Viking Park.

“Vikings Group is excited to welcome Canberra United to Viking Park for their 2020/21 season,” Mr Hill said. “At our core is a love of sport and we are thrilled to be able to bring another first-class sporting team to the Tuggeranong Valley.”
