We’re off!

Canberra United celebrated the launch of their ninth W-League season today, as sponsors, Politicians and Media gathered at Westside Acton Park in Canberra.

The W-League’s most decorated side head into this season with a new-look squad adorned with fresh faces and returning favourites, coupled with a host of our most exciting youngsters.

Speaking at the launch, Capital Football CEO PhIl Brown praised the work of the club and Head Coach Rae Dower heading into this season.

“Rae has amassed a formidable squad for season 9, with a great mix of experienced internationals, current Matildas, seasoned w-league players and young local player’s eager to make their mark on the national stage,” he said.

“Canberra United is a vital part of not only the football community, but the broader Canberra community, and we are exceptionally proud of our team and the part they play promoting football.”

Canberra United will have Round One on the sidelines as a bye, before taking on Melbourne City at Gio Stadium in Round Two as part of a double header featuring the A-League clash between Central Coast Mariners and Wellington Phoenix.

Dower said that having the bye early presented a good opportunity to look at other teams, but said the team is raring to go for their opener next week.

“With such a short season the chance to have the 1st round off and go straight through week to week I think will be good, we won’t have a momentum stall like in previous seasons,” she said.

“Having a ‘bo peep’ at the other teams will provide a bit of an insight of course, but primarily we’re concentrating on ourselves so it will give us another week together to gel on the training park.”

“We’ve recruited well and have a definite plan about how we want to play this season and I think that the squad is a great mix of youth and experience and we’re really excited to see what unfolds.”

In closing, Dower and Brown both acknowledged the incredible support of United’s sponsors and the work and effort they put into the club.

“The support of our many sponsors significantly contributes to the ongoing local availability of that talented player pathway, and we are sincerely grateful for their support,” Brown said.

“In particular, we would like to thank the ACT Government, University of Canberra, ActewAGL•, Banking Solutions for Football Fans, Maree Van Arkel – McGrath Real Estate, Canberra Milk, TSA & Nike, The Tradies Club, Mr Brand Man, Capital Trophies & Sportswear, Performance Edge Sports Physio & Health Clinic and Project”
