Football Federation Australia has today announced that Sunday’s Westfield W-League match between Canberra United and Sydney FC has been postponed.

In addition, the Foxtel Y-League 2019/20 round eight fixture between Canberra United and the Newcastle Jets on Sunday morning has also been postponed.

The decision to postpone the matches was made due to the forecast of extremely hazardous air quality in the Canberra region this weekend.

An announcement when these matches will be rescheduled will be made at a later date.

Meanwhile, Canberra United’s Westfield W-League squad will travel to Sydney this morning for training sessions. Head coach Heather Garriock said it was the best way for her squad to prepare for their next match against Melbourne City next Thursday (9 January).

“It is disappointing that the game is being postponed but the most important thing is our players’ health and wellbeing,” Garriock said. “I think it is a smart thing to postpone it.

“We are heading off to Sydney this morning so we can get a couple of sessions in because we haven’t been able to train the last couple of days due to the smoke.

“I can’t wait to get back on the training pitch and have a proper run.”
