Heather Garriock praised the contribution of the nearly 1700-strong McKellar Park crowd after Sunday’s season-opening win against Melbourne City.

Speaking after the game Garriock was told of the figure, and asked if she had a message for the 1,679 Canberra faithful who turned out.

“Wow,” she said.

“That’s unbelievable.”

“We hear them all the time, and I tell you when they scored the roar from the crowd was just amazing.”

Irish midfielder Denise O’Sullivan, one of the standout performers during the match, echoed Garriock’s comments.

“They really were amazing,” she said.

“I just want to thank them, we really could hear them every second of the game and the crowd was like a 12th player for us.”

“I didn’t know what to expect coming here.”

I’m really happy to be at this club, it’s a great club, an excellent community and I’m really enjoying it.”

“We just want to ask that they all come back next week and keep cheering us on!”

O’Sullivan starred during her first ever Westfield W-League and Canberra United appearance, keeping the midfield ticking over while making timely tackles and some strong forward runs too.

She was far from the first player in Green making their debut, and was full of praise for South African team-mate Rhoda Mulaudzi.

“It was amazing for her to score,” O’Sullivan said.

“Rhoda works really hard, and she is always asking questions in training, always wants to learn and I’m very happy for her.”

Canberra United now turn their attention to a monster meeting with Perth Glory at McKellar Park next Sunday, kicking off at 4pm.

Tickets are now on sale for that game!
