United defender ruled out for rest of the season.

Canberra United defender Emma Checker has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering an ACL tear to her left knee during the warm-up ahead of the 2-0 victory over Perth Glory.

Checker, who has been tremendous form in Season 8 of the Westfield W-League being an integral part of the team that has kept seven clean sheets in the nine matches she has taken part in this season, has subsequently been ruled out for the rest of the campaign.

“We are shattered for Emma personally as she was enjoying some really good form with the team,” Head Coach Rae Dower said. “She has formed a really solid combination with Ellie Brush in the centre of defence. The challenge for us now is to continue that good form and it presents an opportunity for one of her team mates to step in and keep on our winning ways.

“We have enough depth and talent within the squad to cover her loss positionally. Whilst we are all here to support Emma in her surgery and rehabilitation, our team focus will transfer to our upcoming fixture on Sunday as of tonight’s training. Emma will remain here in Canberra with us as a loyal member of the green family until the end of the season.”

Checker will undergo surgey tomorrow morning. The club won’t be making any replacement into the squad.

Canberra United faces the Singapore Women’s National Team at the Australian Institute of Sport on Wednesday 6th January in a trial match with a 6pm kick-off. Admission is free.

The next fixture in the Westfield W-League is this Sunday 10th January when Western Sydney Wanderers provide the opposition at McKellar Park with kick-off at 4pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for concessions with children under-12 admitted free.
