United Seal Finals Spot with Thrilling Draw

Michelle Heyman v Sydney FC

Canberra United have secured their spot in the finals after a thrilling draw with league leaders Sydney FC. Even with plenty of chances at both ends, the 0-0 draw was enough to keep United’s season going.

The visitors came out strong and enjoyed plenty of possession in the opening stages. Despite their early dominance, Sydney struggled to break through. Goalkeeper Keeley Richards came off her line on multiple occasions to shut down the dangerous Remy Siemsen and keep the scores level.

The first real chance of the half fell to Grace Maher, with the midfielder sending a low hit shot towards goal but was denied by a strong save from Jada Whyman.

Kiwi international, Paige Satchell, looked to use her pace to advantage throughout the half and was constantly seen slipping in behind the Sydney backline.

With chances at either end throughout the half, it was the goalkeepers that stood out as both Richards and Whyman stood up strong to keep the scores level at the break.

United came out firing in the second half as Heyman, along with Laura Hughes, created plenty of heart stopping chances.

With Siemsen a constant threat, the centre back pairing of Jessika Nash and Kendall Fletcher shut her down on multiple occasions.

United would throw everything at the visitors but would have no luck in getting past the in-form Jada Whyman.

With the clock winding down, both sides looked for the winning goal but would be unable to make it past either of the keepers.

Even with the draw, United managed to seal their spot in the finals for the first time in four years.
