Quick Look |

Canberra United take on Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Thursday night in the second away day thanks to JT Sports Tours.

The two teams face off in similar circumstances, both arriving on a short turnaround but with Adelaide having triumphed over reigning Premiers Brisbane on Sunday afternoon while Canberra fell to the Jets 1-0 in Newcastle on Saturday night.

The match is the first of Westfield W-League Round 4, which doubles this season as Rebel Female Football Round celebrating the contribution of Women and Girls to our sport.

Key Bits |

Rachel Corsie returns for Canberra United after missing the match with the Jets following international duty, and her leadership and no-nonsense style will be so important for the visitors in the backline.

Tash Prior will also be back in action for Heather Garriock’s side after missing the past two outings and between her and Corsie the visiting defense takes on a physical, experienced look that will challenge Adelaide’s attacking group.

This will be the first time that Adelaide forward Michelle Heyman faces her former side, having left Canberra ahead of the new season.

Top spot is available to both sides with a win, at least for some part of the weekend and they will both come out firing and looking to capitalise.

Refiloe Jane will again be absent from United as she continues to blaze a trail for South Africa at AFCON, scoring this morning in the big win over Equatorial Guinea.

The weather in Adelaide could be set to play a factor with storms and heavy winds preceding game day, similar to the windy weather in Newcastle last weekend.

From the Coach |

On Rachel Corsie returning…

“It’s massive. Especially as our no.1 centre back, and as the leader of the team. For her not to be out there the team felt it, and it maybe shouldn’t be like that, but she’ll be there this week.

“That’s why she was one of my top recruits. As a person both on and off the field she’s been so important.

“It gave us a taste of what it’s like for her not to be there, and Ellie came out as one of the youngest captains in the league and did a great job of stepping up and leading by example

“But you can’t buy experience, Corsie has played over 100 times for her country and we did really miss her.”

On the short turnaround…

“I think it’s good to have a short turnaround, particularly coming off the back of a loss. We’re fully focussed for Adelaide and looking forward to playing at Coopers Stadium.

“We had a video session Monday, a really quality run-out yesterday and a -1 session today which is so important for making sure we stay sharp.

“Morale is great. I’m really blessed to have such a great bunch of girls who have one common goal which is to lift trophies this season. And while you lose it’s a learning experience and you learn what not to do, and again the short turnaround helps you back up and go out for three points tomorrow night.”

On Adelaide United…

“Adelaide are a very, very good team. They’re well-structured and disciplined too.

After watching the game against Brisbane, they dominated and played very well so we’re looking forward to a tough game tomorrow night. It’s always a tough game when you’re away from home.

Collectively, they work really well as a unit. We’ve done a video session on them, so we are prepped and ready to go.”
