Quick Look |

Canberra United take on Sydney FC on Sunday thanks to ActewAGL in round five of the Westfield W-League.

The game won’t just be important from a football perspective, with United, ActewAGL and The Salvation Army all partnering together for a Christmas Toy Drive. On Sunday, there will be a Giving Balloon tree displayed at McKellar Park where supporters can donate toys to be distributed as part of the drive.

More information, including what to bring, can be found here.

Key Bits |

United and Sydney FC remain separated by just a point on the table in sixth and seventh after both picking up wins in round one, but winless since then. Sydney have had the bye and lost matches to Melbourne City and Victory, while United were involved in a thrilling 4-4 draw with Perth before picking up losses on the road against Newcastle and Adelaide.

Refiloe Jane will be a key returner for United having helped secure South Africa’s qualification to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and her presence in midfield will show. She excelled in United’s first two outing, including a brace of penalties in the win over Perth and Heather Garriock is looking forward to having her back.

These two sides have evenly split the 16 contests between them since the Westfield W-League began, with both teams winning on seven occasions and sharing the points twice. Home ground advantage was key last season as United won at McKellar Park in a thriller and Sydney triumphed at Allianz, but with only one regular season game this year the bragging rights rest on this clash.

Amy Harrison is back in line for selection after 11 months off with a knee injury, and she has the potential to be an important piece for the Sky Blues as she works back to full fitness.

From the Coach |

On Refiloe Jane returning…

“Fifi will bring some stability back to this side in the midfield.”

“She has been amazing, just returning from World Cup qualifiers where she’s lead South Africa to their first ever Women’s World Cup, which is fantastic. She’s on a big high at the moment.

She’s stoked to be back for this weekend, even though she’ll miss the final but that just shows her dedication to Canberra United.”

On Ellie Carpenter’s NAB YFOTY nomination…

“It doesn’t surprise me at all, we all know what she can do.

“She showed her leadership by captaining Canberra United a couple of weeks ago, and her on and off field qualities are excellent, so it’s great for her to get this recognition.

“She has been very solid for us this year, she does what she’s told and always sticks to the game plan.

This weekend we’ll need her to step up and she has done that very well so far this season.”

On Sydney FC…

“We know to always expect quality from Sydney FC, they’re a very good side with plenty of good players.

“In saying that we don’t put too much of the focus on the opposition, we make sure the focus is on us and what we can control in training and we put ourselves in the best position to succeed on the weekend.

“We’re always fired up against Sydney FC, it meant a lot for me to play for them for all those years.”

“But now it means more to me being a coach for Canberra United, we always want to beat the Sky Blues.

“It hasn’t been easy losing the last two but we’re up for it and have been training really hard.”
